Hi, Lee and Valarie,

Add me to the frustration and eye strain list trying to locate ship manifests for Grazia and children, and for Vito's sister, Mary/Rose/Maria Rosa/Rosa Maria. I'll try again after supper.

Baci,
Biff

Hello Biff Very Happy !
Catch you after dinner
No doubt we'll find this manifest
I can't wait to find out what element we're missing in the hunt!

I did the Ellis Island/ Castle Garden using just the last name about 15 Fornabaio's from Potenza and Stigliano, wide range of years, nothing before 1905..Which I would think they would have had to be here at least a few years before Vito came..

Lee Very Happy brought this up earlier,
Isn’t it also a recommendation to look at siblings, etc when you get stuck?
I hope this helps rather than confuses the search, but as sweetpea and Biff suggested, perhaps if we find Vito‘s sister & her husband?
Valarie

Here are a set of census records for Felice Fornabaio, possibly Vito’s brother-in-law from the possible 1905 manifest
Quote::
possible 1905 manifest
3 Mar 1905 SS Lombardia, Naploi to NY
Line 30
Vito Di Chiara, 31 (abt 1873)
- married
- laborer
- last residence Stigliano
- destination NY
- joining brother-in-law Felice Fornabaio at 337 112th Ave
(note: did Vito have a sister?)

Felice Fornabaio & family
(note: second son named Anthony, Vito‘s 1st son named Anthony Wink )
1930 census
1920 census
1910 census

edit: correction

According to family history, Felice is Grace's sister's husband see sweetpea's note below

edit: correction

Found the correct bride!
Anna R Mandile was filed under the same date in 1901
(I removed the incorrect bride)

Probable marriage record:
Fornabaio Felice May 16 1900 Manhattan 9674
Mandile Anna R May 16 1901 Manhattan 9674

Anthony's Daughter did confirm Felice Fornabio was grandma's, (Grace), sister's husband.

So that makes it a Brother-in-law, but it's not Vitos sister it's Grace's sister...

A few more tips from the Family Tree Problem Solver:

Cluster genealogy - A research tactic in which you study your ancestors
sibling's, friends and neighbors in order to learn more about your ancestor.
(So there is a method to our madness) Laughing

Analysis -
What does the record add to what I know? Does it support or contradict
information I already found.

Other than my ancestor, who else was involved in creating or witnessing
the record? Who was mentioned? Are they likely to be "official"
participants or associates of my ancestor? Have they appeared in other
records of my ancestor?

Would other records have been created either before or after this one
to complete it's purpose?

Are there clues recorded here that are not directly related to this record
but could lead to additional records or people to be studied?

Focus on families, find friends, and follow the trail!!

Sources - Newspapers, both local and denominational. Religious newspapers cover a wider geographic area than local church registries.

Court records - Coroners reports are issued when an inquest is held to
investigate unusual or unknown circumstances surrounding a death.
(Vito!)

Probate Records
Divorce Records -
(Could be some further clues here for Grace!)
Land Records, Deed Books
(Didn't she own her own home?)

We'll get to the bottom of this yet, may require sending out more request.

Has anyone used the searched term MOGLIE or FIGLIA for the manifest....
we've seen plenty of these as well..........

Lee

Thank you sweetpea Very Happy !
I found the correct record and fixed the post it was: Mandile Anna R 16 May 1901 Manhattan 9674

Laura & Lee I'm so glad you've found manifests for Felice!
Perhaps we can find Felice's wife, Grace's sister's, manifest -
Anna R Mandile, born abt 1880-1883, immig before 16 May 1901

Lee, you're right there may be more clues in the neighbors names on the census records and possible traveling companions on the manifests.
Valarie

link to Lee's manifest find Very Happy from Ellis Island
name was mistranscribed, the 'F' was transcribed as a 'T'
